LureRater Privacy Policy
Last updated 14 October 2026
LureRater is an offshore trolling logbook published by Gary Maclachlan, Catalyst Marketing ANZ (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what the LureRater app and website collect, why, and the choices you have.
No accounts
LureRater does not ask for your name, email address, phone number or any login. When you first open the app it creates a random device identifier, stored on your device, and your data is linked to that identifier only.
What we collect
- Logbook data you enter — your lures (name, size, hook, position), strikes (lure, spread position, outcome, species, date, location name, depth, tide, hook) and saved spreads.
- Location — if you allow location access, your GPS position is read while you use the app and saved with the strikes you log. It is not tracked in the background.
- Sea temperature — looked up for your current position and saved with your strikes.
- Photos — only photos you choose to attach to a lure or strike. They are resized on your device before upload.
- App settings — units, boat type and length, and the day’s spread are kept on your device only.
We do not collect contacts, advertising identifiers, browsing history or payment information, and we do not use analytics or advertising SDKs.
How we use it
Your data is used to provide the app’s features: storing and syncing your logbook, ranking lures and hooks, building spreads and producing trip reports. We also produce aggregated lure-performance statistics, described below. We do not sell your data, share it for advertising, or use it to track you across other apps or websites.
Aggregated lure-performance statistics
To understand which lures work and improve LureRater, we combine strike results from all logbooks into totals: how many strikes each lure brand, model (shape), type, size and colour received, and how many of those fish were landed or lost, optionally by species. The owner only ever sees aggregated lure-performance totals by brand, model, size and colour. Device IDs, GPS positions, location names and photos are never included.
Optional community statistics
Sharing is off by default. If you choose to share anonymous lure-performance data, the strikes you share may be combined with other anglers’ records into statistics by species, lure, size, position and location name. Community results never show exact GPS coordinates or device identifiers, and only appear once enough records exist that no individual can be singled out.
AI lure identification
If you use “Identify from a photo”, that photo is sent to Anthropic’s Claude AI model (via Netlify AI Gateway) to suggest the lure’s brand, model, colour and size. The photo is sent only when you tap the button and is used only to return that suggestion.
Service providers
- Netlify — hosts the app, API, database and photo storage.
- Open-Meteo — receives your current coordinates to return sea-surface temperature.
- Anthropic — processes photos you submit for AI lure identification.
Offline storage
When you are out of signal, strikes (including attached photos) are queued on your device and uploaded the next time you are online. A copy of your logbook is cached on your device so the app works offshore.
Retention and deletion
Your data is kept until you delete it. You can delete individual strikes, lures and saved spreads in the app. To delete all data linked to your device, email us (see below) and we will remove it. Uninstalling the app removes the on-device copy and identifier, but not data already synced — contact us to have that removed.
Security
All data is sent over encrypted HTTPS connections and access to it is scoped to your device identifier.
Children
LureRater is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update this page and the “Last updated” date above.
